Granting Us Access on Cloudflare
This page walks you through giving McNair Media the narrow access we need to protect your website during an outage — on a Cloudflare account you own. The whole process takes about five minutes, touches none of your existing DNS records, and can be revoked by you at any time. Cloudflare's free plan is all this requires.
1 — Log In and Open API Tokens
Sign in at dash.cloudflare.com, click the profile icon (top right) → My Profile → API Tokens → Create Token, then choose Create Custom Token.
2 — Set Exactly One Permission
Under Permissions choose Zone → DNS → Edit. Under Zone Resources choose Include → Specific zone → your domain. That combination is the entire grant: DNS records, on that one domain, nothing else.
3 — Create and Send
Click Continue → Create Token, and send us the token through the secure link we provide (never email it). We store it encrypted, and every use of it is logged on our side — and independently visible to you in Cloudflare's own audit log.
Narrow on Purpose
- It allows: editing DNS records on this one domain — which is what lets us redirect your website to standby infrastructure during an outage, automatically
- It cannot: touch your Cloudflare account, your billing, your other domains, or your domain's registration itself
- Our written policy: we use this access for the records that route web traffic and for emergency failover. We do not modify mail records (MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC) except on your written request
- To revoke: My Profile → API Tokens → Delete. Our access ends that instant, and everything else about your account is exactly as it was
